Onwards to Bamako

We went to the station again today and were able to buy tickets to Bamako. This is very exciting!!!! The train is scheduled to leave at 13.50 on Wednesday. Hopefully we will arrive in Bamako on Friday. We are off to find a supermarket to buy some provisions for our journey - but hope to be able to supplement these with some more local produce along the way.

A Few Days in Dakar

Afriqiyah Airways got us to Dakar in time... and with our luggage! We were very happy! The next morning we found out that the train to Dakar was not leaving until Wednesday so that gave us 5 days to explore the city and the surrounding areas. We've been to

  • Ile de Goree - very peaceful and a great place to wander around,

  • The western-most point of Africa - well almost, as one of the big hotels has claimed the actual point for its own so riff-raff like us get the second most western point! (see photo),

  • Keur Moussa Monastery - great African liturgy accompanied by drumming and local stringed instrument,

  • Lac Rose - which was just a bit pink in places,

  • City Centre - busy, bustling and lively.

This evening we'll see in 2008 on the beach! Bet you wish you were here!

Our first ever blog

We're packed and almost ready to go to bed for a few hours!  Just a few e-mails to write, including this one to post the first entry on our blog!  Passports (with visas!) are ready and waiting.  We're hoping that Afriqiyah Airlines runs to schedule and that by tomorrow evening we will be in a sea-front hotel in Dakar, Senegal.  A bit of luxury before we hit the dusty roads.
